Y DNA - Because It Helps a Bunch

Boy, does it ever! Without Ydna testing, my Kentucky Prowses would not have been able to connect our lines, let alone connect to Carl's line in Highweek, Devon. Sometimes Ydna is the only way to get beyond the brick wall - once you are beyond 6 generations, the regular autosomal (cousin finder) DNA is of little help. Now we are able to work both sides of The Pond to connect. Yes, thorough genealogical research is a must. That is what will ultimately connect our lines as we probably intersect within paper record time-frame. IF those papers still exist. We continue to do the research, but having the same Ydna haplogroup and all three lines matching within that haplogroup gives us target time-frames to work within. Carl's line emigrated to Australia slightly after Jordan's line appears in the United States. The estimated intersect of those two lines is between about 1400 and 1900. We both have well document lines, although Jordan's as I say only appears in the U.S. in the early 1800's. There's more detail in the research, but no need to go farther down that rabbit hole here. Below is a screenshot of a portion of what is called the Time Tree. This shows one of our subgroups, Devon Highweek (haplogroup R-FTB77705). You can see two tested members and how their lines both connect within a bracketed time period. This gives us an indication of the time-frame we should be looking for the connexion between those lines. It is only an estimation, but it really helps us focus. When looking at this, we need to be mindful that only Y 700 testers show on the Time Tree. We actually have five members within this sub-group, so they all fall within this estimated range of connexion. This is an important point to highlight: Not every Y tester needs to be at the highest level. Our subgroup within the Prouse-Prowse DNA Project has five testers: two at Y700, two at Y111, and one who upgraded from Y37 to Y67. Because of the good genealogical research and the Ydna matching level within the haplogroup, only two really needed to be at the higher testing level in order to confirm probable shared lineage in Highweek, Devon. This is where I plug the Prouse-Prowse DNA Project As of today we are 60 members and growing! We are not just a YDNA Project. We have many members who have joined using their autosomal DNA results - some from other sites, such as Ancestry, MyHeritage, or 23&me. There is no cost to become a member! Create an FTDNA account, transfer your DNA results from another site (or order from FTDNA) and join. That said, YDNA kits are always encouraged! We hope all members work together on furthering their research and document their connexions with each other. One place to do this, in addition to your own programs, is on WikiTree. WikiTree is free collaborative site with sourced entries.
